    The end with the white threads and groove is the output.  It points toward the water heater on the cold side and away from the water heater on the hot side.
    This type of nipple comes in different lengths.  This one is 3 inches long.  Please measure and be sure 3 inches will work for you.
    It's essential to use a heat trap/dielectric nipple on the input and output of your water heater to extend its life and reduce your energy cost.  Without the heat traps, convection currents circulate hot water out of the water heater into the pipes where it cools.  D
